A Room Of One's Own

Many of our clients are presented with the issue of a lack of privacy due to how close other properties or houses are to their own. With one client, solutions to the privacy issue was the top concern in the design. While there are many solutions to this issue, such as walls or other built structures, this client wanted a solution using plant materials which would integrate into the existing natural setting. The site was small and the client wanted plants that wouldn't take over the space and dwarf other landscape plants.

To resolve this, we planted an "instant" 20 year old hedge, using mature plant specimens from our nursery that enclosed the site from the neighbors. With an aesthetically pleasing proportion to the rest of this client's design, strategic placement of the hedge provided the needed privacy, but did not make the already small site feel smaller.

In similar uses, we have employed similar natural barriers for sound abatement as well as partioning for creating outdoor rooms in the built landscape environment. In our experience, we have found that issues that appear to be problems are the structural root of a beautiful solution.
